Lonnie Smith

Lonnie M. Smith served on Intuitive Surgical’s Board of Directors from June 1997 until his retirement in April 2020, last serving as chairman of the board. Previously, he served as chief executive officer of Intuitive Surgical from June 1997 to January 2010 and remained as an executive officer from January 2010 to January 2013. Prior to joining Intuitive, Lonnie was the senior executive vice president at Hillenbrand Industries, which he joined in 1978 and during his tenure, he was also a member of the executive committee, the office of the president, and the board of directors. Lonnie has also held positions with The Boston Consulting Group and IBM .
Lonnie served as a member of the Board of Directors of Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc. from January 2013 to December 2015 and has served as a member of the board of directors of several private companies.
Lonnie earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Utah State University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
